Kiriaini Factory is a washing station in Kenya located by the village with the same name, in the Muranga district. They've been operating since 1974 and the 571 farmers who deliver cherry to the factory are all small, each cultivating about 200 trees alongside other food crops.
The farmers typically have the SL28 and SL34 varieties which have made Kenya famous worldwide, but they've also started growing the newer Batian and Ruiri 11 varieties that have been introduced in Kenya due to their resistance to diseases, and because they mature earlier and start producing cherry only two years after planting.
It's well-known by now that Kenyan coffees have taken a dip in quality compared to how it tasted only ten years ago. This is in large part due to the introduction of more hardy but less tasty varietals in the combat against climate change and diseases.
Kenya still tastes pretty dang good, and we think it's worth supporting Kenyan farmers as they work towards more sustainable coffee production. In this lot you can expect to find a good amount of fruit-forward flavours, and some darker chocolate and sugary flavours.
