Finca Aurora • Nicaragua
The Ferrufino family bought their farm Finca Aurora in 2004. The whole family is involved in the coffee business, Dr. Enrique Ferrufino and his wife Silvia, along with their children.
One of their core values is to inspire people through coffee. They have invested in providing workers with fair wages, safe living conditions, health services, food and education. They also work with other small producers in their area to help them improve their farming practices.
They also care a lot about preserving natura, and have comitted to use renewable energy, conserving water and preserving natural habitats. They've also kept native trees on the farm, which are home to many types of birds and wildlife while also providing shade for the coffee trees. All this together has allowed them to get a Rainforest Alliance certification.
During harvest season, the coffee is hand-picked, sorted and pulped. Then, the coffee is laid to dry on raised beds or patios. All of the processing happens on the farm itself, and Finca Aurora was one of the first farms in Nicaragua to have this kind of fully integrated coffee production.
