Aricha Station • Ethiopia
Aricha is the name of a washing station in Ethiopia located 1925 metres above sea level in the famous Yirgacheffe region. Over 300 smallholder farmers deliver cherry to the washing station, each having on average less than 1 hectare of land. At Aricha the coffee is sorted and then depulped and wet fermented in specialized tanks for 36 to 48 hours. The coffee is dried on raised beds for up to 18 days. We prefer to buy from single farms and farmers as often as we can, but often that can be difficult due to practical or political reasons. In Ethiopia a farm needs to be at least 3 hectares to get a licence to export coffee, so none of the small farms delivering cherry to Aricha would be able to do it on their own.
This is a classic Ethiopian coffee with notes that remind us of tea and citrus.
